How to Spot a Scam Call in Adelaide (2025 Edition)

The phone rings — should you pick up?

Scam calls targeting Adelaide households have surged in 2025. Most pretend to be "Microsoft Support", "the ATO", or "Telstra Security". Here's how to spot them.

1. They create urgency

Real companies don't tell you your computer will be locked in 30 minutes. Hang up.

2. They ask you to install software

TeamViewer, AnyDesk, UltraViewer — if a stranger asks you to install any of these, it's a scam.

3. They want gift cards

The ATO does not accept Apple gift cards. Ever.

4. The number looks "local"

Spoofing makes any number look Australian. Verify by calling the company directly using the number on their official website.

5. They know your name

Your name and number are easy to find. Don't let that convince you they are legitimate.

What to do if you've already let them in

  1. Disconnect from the internet immediately.
  2. Power off the machine.
